On December 7th, the Ministry of Human Development, Families, and Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs organized a men’s and boys’ workshop on behavioral change in collaboration with the Family Support and Gender Affairs Department. The event primarily targeted high school-age boys and took place in the San Pedro High School conference room as part of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. Participants learned about the concept of toxic masculinity and discussed the importance of promoting gender equality, with a strong emphasis on the need to end violence against women and girls.
During the workshop, participants engaged in presentations and group activities to explore each topic. One topic addressed the challenges posed by traditional gender roles, particularly the expectation that males should be dominant. Presenters highlighted how this mindset can harm communities by encouraging aggression among males toward females.
The youth in attendance learned about the importance of preventing gender-based violence, which disrupts homes, affects families, and impacts the lives of young children. Additionally, the workshop provided advice aimed at empowering young men and promoting a shift in their attitudes toward gender-based violence.
During the session, one participant expressed that it was a productive experience and emphasized the importance of making the right choices in life for everyone’s benefit. He noted that these choices help in achieving goals and avoiding trouble and potential incarceration. The overall outcome of the workshop was positive, and plans for future sessions were discussed.
The presenters believe that healthier environments can be created by empowering young men to challenge traditional gender norms, dismantle harmful stereotypes, and advocate for positive change. This includes establishing safe spaces where everyone can thrive free from discrimination and violence.
The program was explicitly structured for young people, particularly students, to help them understand the values and benefits of loving and respecting one another. The results of the nationwide workshop will be analyzed to identify areas for improvement that can be applied in future sessions.
The organizers emphasized that their collective efforts are based on recognizing that gender equality is not solely a women’s issue but a fundamental human right. This right requires the involvement and commitment of all genders within society.
