Former San Pedro Fire Chief Orin Smith Retires

After serving in the Belize National Fire Service for 27 years, former Officer Commanding of the San Pedro Fire Station, Orin Smith, has officially retired. Smith led the island’s fire station from 2022 to 2025. He came to San Pedro with more than 22 years of experience, having served in various municipalities across the country.
During his tenure in San Pedro, Smith directed both the operational command and administrative oversight of one of Belize’s busiest emergency response zones. He is credited with strengthening emergency preparedness and interagency coordination, and improving operational readiness for the tourism, marine, and commercial sectors that faced risks unique to San Pedro. Smith said his contributions also strengthened operational readiness, firefighter discipline, and public safety engagement.
The seasoned firefighter, who joined the Belize National Fire Service in 1999, told The San Pedro Sun that throughout his career, he has believed the greatest investment any fire service can make is in the continuous development of its personnel.
“My leadership philosophy has always been that technical competence, integrity, discipline, education, and professional character are the foundation of operational excellence,” he said. “I have sought to inspire firefighters to pursue lifelong learning, embrace personal responsibility, and strive for excellence both on and off duty, while helping to build a Belize National Fire Service recognized for professionalism, innovation, and leadership throughout the region.”
Throughout his career, Smith was actively involved in community outreach and public safety education initiatives. He coordinated and participated in numerous fire prevention, emergency preparedness, CPR, first aid, evacuation planning, and fire extinguisher training programs across Belize. He partnered with the Belize Red Cross, municipal authorities, emergency responders, and community organizations to deliver these programs. In addition to San Pedro, communities benefiting from his expertise included Belize City and the Belize District, Belmopan and surrounding communities, Orange Walk District, and several rural communities nationwide.
During his career, Smith also received professional training through international agencies, including the United States Marine Corps, and participated in training programs in Malaysia and Japan. He said that despite responding to numerous fires throughout his career, his primary focus was always on prevention. As such, he prioritized public education campaigns to help communities better understand fire safety and emergency preparedness.
