A 26-year-old fisherman was shot and wounded in the San Pedrito area of San Pedro Town during the early hours of Sunday, August 16th. The victim, identified as John Hernandez, was taken to the Dr. Otto Rodriguez San Pedro Polyclinic II shortly after 4AM after suffering gunshot injuries. He was treated for wounds to his upper left shoulder and left leg and is reportedly in stable condition and recovering.
According to preliminary reports, Hernandez had arrived at a residence in a golf cart and was entering the yard when two men reportedly arrived on a motorcycle. The passenger allegedly dismounted, approached Hernandez, and fired multiple shots, striking him twice. Police responded to the scene, where officers photographed and processed the area and recovered several expended shell casings.
Police have since launched an active investigation and increased operations in San Pedro. Several persons have reportedly been detained for questioning in connection with the incident. Preliminary information suggests that investigators are looking into whether the shooting may have been retaliatory and possibly linked to a killing that occurred approximately five months ago. Police have not publicly confirmed a motive.
Authorities are also reportedly investigating possible gang-related connections. Police continue operations based on intelligence, including visits to known locations and residences, as part of efforts to gather information and prevent further violence.
Following the shooting, residents reported an increased police presence in the area as officers continued their investigation and questioned persons who may have information about the incident.
The San Pedro Sun will provide additional information following the release of an official police report.
