More than 70 school bags and free haircuts were provided to children in San Pedro Town on August 29th as part of a back-to-school initiative organized by United Democratic Party (UDP) Senator Gabriel Zetina, with support from local volunteers and barbers. The event ran from 9AM to 1PM at Coleman’s Barbershop in the San Juan area and Ramos Barbershop in San Mateo.
The initiative was organized to assist families preparing for the start of the new school year. Volunteers and barbers coordinated activities at both locations, where children received free haircuts and school bags while supplies lasted. Organizers said the effort was intended to help offset some of the expenses families face when preparing children to return to the classroom.
Preparations for the giveaway began several weeks earlier and included securing donations, coordinating with participating barbers, and arranging transportation assistance where needed. Volunteers also informed residents in nearby neighborhoods about the times and locations of the activities. Barbers at both establishments donated their services, while volunteers helped distribute school bags and manage participant flow.
Zetina thanked the volunteers, barbers, parents, and others who supported the initiative. “Seeing the kids happy and smiling is what makes it all worth it for us. I thank God for continuing to bless us with the opportunity to give back, and I’m grateful to every barber, volunteer, and parent who continues to show up and believe in what we do,” he said. “At the end of the day, it’s all for the kids. Their smiles are enough for us. God willing, we’ll keep doing this for many more years.”
Organizers indicated that similar back-to-school initiatives may be held in the future, with the possibility of expanding to other neighborhoods and involving additional partners to reach more children and families across San Pedro.
