BWS Project to Improve Water Access in San Mateo

Belize Water Services (BWS) is upgrading its water network in San Pedro Town, Ambergris Caye, to extend service to areas that still lack connections. Recent work in the San Mateo subdivision includes installing new water mains and added service connections for residents.
BWS Chairman Cornelio Acosta told The San Pedro Sun that the company aims to expand access across the island as the community grows. He said the San Mateo project includes approximately 1,380 feet of new water lines and about 25 new service connections in the subdivision north of town.
Once completed, the improvements are expected to provide better water pressure, increase service coverage, and strengthen the area’s water network. “It will support the community’s continued growth and development,” Acosta said.
He added that BWS will continue expanding its services in San Pedro and credited the San Pedro Town Council with helping identify areas that still lack access to the water network.
Other projects include connections in areas off Marina Drive and within the Eiley subdivision. Acosta said the company is also planning to extend services farther north, including areas near the northern police substation, where development continues.
Plans also include expanding services to Secret Beach, another rapidly growing area of Ambergris Caye. However, Acosta noted that a major project to serve northern areas is awaiting funding, which the company expects to secure through the Caribbean Development Bank.
Mayor Gualberto “Wally” Nuñez said his administration continues to work closely with BWS to expand access to water services across the island. He emphasised that every island resident should have access to a reliable water supply.
For residents still awaiting connections, Nuñez urged patience, explaining that services would be extended as the necessary infrastructure is installed. The expansion requires new water lines and supporting infrastructure to reach communities that are not yet connected to the existing network.
BWS expressed appreciation to the San Pedro Town Council for its assistance and to the Government of Belize for its investment in the San Mateo project. The company also acknowledged the government’s broader support for improvements to the island’s water infrastructure.
