PUP Northern Caucus Endorses BTL–SMART Deal Despite Public Opposition

The Northern Caucus of the People’s United Party (PUP) has unanimously endorsed the proposed acquisition of Speednet (SMART) by Belize Telemedia Limited (BTL). The endorsement followed a special meeting in Orange Walk Town on Saturday.

National Meteorological Service Reports Record-Low February Temperatures

As low temperatures continue across Belize, recent cold fronts have pushed February temperatures to record levels, particularly in the northern regions. On February 2, the National Meteorological Service reported new record lows in the north, with unusually cold conditions also observed in western districts and the Cayes. The coldest temperatures were recorded in Libertad Village, Corozal District, and Gallon Jug, Orange Walk District, where thermometers dropped to 41.7°F.

Former BTL Workers Stage Six-Day Protest Over Unpaid Severance

Members of the Belize Communications Workers for Justice (BCWJ), comprised of former Belize Telemedia Limited (BTL) employees, launched a six-day protest outside the company’s headquarters on St. Thomas Street in Belize City beginning January 30, 2026.

U.S. Lawsuit Filed Over Tourists’ Deaths at San Pedro Resort

Following a press conference on Tuesday, February 3rd, it was revealed that the families of American tourists Wafae El-Arar, Kaoutar Naqqad, and Imane Mallah have filed a federal lawsuit in a Massachusetts court in the United States. The three women tragically died while staying at Royal Kahal Beach Resort, located south of San Pedro Town on Ambergris Caye.

Remembering Long-Time Island Resident Iain Ritchie

The San Pedro community is mourning the passing of Stanley Iain Ritchie, “Iain,” a longtime island resident, entrepreneur, and family man, who died on January 23rd. Ritchie was born on February 16, 1939, in England to Victor and Nancy Ritchie, and spent more than four decades making an indelible contribution to life on Ambergris Caye.

Paving and Road Safety Works Continue in San Pedro

Ongoing road work is underway across San Pedro as the Town Council continues efforts to improve road conditions and safety. The work includes paving, additional road signage, and painting speed bumps, with Marina Road nearing completion and southern road paving set to begin near the Mahogany Bay entrance.

Over 100 Tons of Early Sargassum Cleared From San Pedro Beaches

San Pedro Town experienced an unusually early influx of sargassum, which began washing ashore on public beaches on Monday, January 26, 2026. The San Pedro Town Council immediately mobilized its cleanup team to respond.

Fundraiser Held to Assist San Marcos Fire Victims

A fundraiser to assist the family of Hilton Claasen and Ambar Ayala was held at Wayo’s Beach Bar in the Boca del Rio area on January 24th. Claasen and Ayala’s home was damaged by a fire on January 10th, prompting the community to come together in support.
