Concerned Islanders Offer Suggestions to Tackle the Causes of Traffic Accidents
Following recent traffic accidents in San Pedro Town, including one involving tourists, the local transport department is intensifying efforts to address some of the root causes of these mishaps. Concerned residents have also voiced their suggestions, offering solutions to deter reckless driving, careless behavior, and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Consultation Proposed on Bridge Linking Ambergris Caye to Mexico
Environmentalists and concerned residents in San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, are raising concerns about the potential negative impacts of a proposed road and bridge to Mexico that would run through the Bacalar Chico National Park. Prime Minister Honorable Dr. John Briceño first confirmed the idea of connecting Ambergris Caye with Mexico in October 2021. Four years later, the project is still under discussion, but on August 15th, the Prime Minister announced that consultations will take place on the island before any work begins.

San Pedro Advances Roadwork Amid Challenges to Boost Infrastructure
The San Pedro Town Council continues its roadwork project, with the most recent upgrades taking place in the DFC area. Work is ongoing on Pearl Street, behind La Dispensa del Hogar store, leading to Jimbo’s Apartments, as well as two nearby streets close to Kelly Store. The next phase of the project will move into the Eiley Subdivision.

San Pedro Classic Fly Fishing 2025 Highlights Conservation and Youth Participation
The 2025 San Pedro Classic Fly Fishing Tournament, held from August 14th to 16th in San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, was a celebration of sport, community, and conservation. The event drew 18 teams competing for bonefish, tarpon, and permit on the island’s pristine flats. Over three days, anglers showcased their skills while gathering at Central Park to share experiences and camaraderie.

San Pedro Sun Reporter Dion Vansen Participates in Training in Panama
From August 8th to 15th, journalists from Central America, the Caribbean, and South America gathered in Panama City for workshops on combating misinformation, data collection, and digital security. San Pedro Sun’s Senior Reporter Dion Vansen and three other Belizean journalists joined the training: Zoila Palma of Breaking Belize News, Louis Wade III of Plus TV, and Hipolito Novelo of Great Belize Media.

Gabriel Zetina and supported by Senator Janelle Chanona, the workshop aimed to equip stakeholders with the necessary legal and policy tools to navigate Belize’s evolving governance framework for land use, development, and environmental compliance.

San Pedro, Orange Walk, Belmopan, and Bacalar, Mexico, have embarked on a sister city collaboration to boost tourism, promote cultural exchange, and advance sustainable development. The initiative took a significant step forward with a preliminary exchange on August 7th, during which the mayors of each municipality discussed actionable plans.
