Lobster Season Opens on July 1st
All fishers and the general public are advised that the highly anticipated season for the Caribbean Spiny Lobster (Panulirus argus) will officially open on Tuesday, July 1, 2025. The Belize Fisheries Department (BFD) noted that this is in accordance with the Fisheries Act and its Subsidiary Regulations. The season will remain open until February 28, 2026.

On Sunday, June 22nd, Eco-Museum Belize on northern Ambergris Caye came alive with color, culture, and community spirit as it hosted a lively festival and fundraiser in support of the K’iinich Ahau Belize Pok ta Pok team from Yo Creek, Orange Walk. The goal? To help them travel to the 6th Annual Pok Ta Pok Mundo Maya World Cup in Copán, Honduras.

San Pedro Belize Express Clarifies Viral Video Showing Standing Passengers
On June 23rd, San Pedro Belize Express (SPBE) Water Taxi addressed a video circulating on social media showing passengers standing aboard one of their vessels. The company clarified that the vessel in question was a double-deck boat, and due to unexpected rainfall, passengers from the upper deck moved to the lower deck to seek shelter. SPBE said this led to a temporary crowding situation on the lower level.

PEACE Graduation Ceremony a Success: Over 200 Students Receive Certificates
The San Pedro Police Department, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology (MoEST), hosted the Positive Engagement and Civic Education (PEACE) graduation ceremony on Monday, June 24th, at the Lions Den. Two hundred thirty-one students from Holy Cross Anglican School and Isla Bonita Elementary School received certificates for completing the PEACE program.

The event, observed countrywide, featured various government departments and public officers from San Pedro who set up informational booths to engage with the community and share valuable services and resources.

Facility Used to Store Bodies on the Island Out of Service
The refrigerated container used for storing bodies in San Pedro Town is currently out of service due to a critical failure in its cooling system. An essential component, believed to be part of the air conditioning unit, has malfunctioned and needs replacement. As a result, when someone passes away on the island, the body must be quickly transported to the morgue at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH) in Belize City.
