BEL requests electricity rate increase
Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) has officially requested an increase in electricity rates by filing a proposal with the Public Utilities Commission (PUC) on April 4, 2025. The proposal suggests raising the average price by three cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh), changing it from $0.40 to a minimum of $0.43 per kWh. If approved, this increase would take effect on January 1, 2026, and remain in place until June 30, 2028.

The Central Building Authority issues Stop Order on the Cayo Rosario project
A stop order has been issued to halt the construction of a development on Cayo Rosario, a small island off the northwest coast of San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, which is located within the Hol Chan Marine Reserve. This directive to pause construction came from the Central Building Authority (CBA), which, in a formal note, mentioned that several structures had been built on the island without the necessary permits.

San Pedro High School awarded second place at Band Fest 2025 competition
The San Pedro High School (SPHS) returned to the island as sub-champions of the Belize Band Fest 2025, held on Saturday, April 12th, in Independence Village, southern Belize. The island’s marching band performed stunningly while defending their championship title. However, at the end of the event, the judges declared Independence High School (IHS) the top marching band of this year's competition.

Give A Gift hosts first Easter egg hunt and movie night
On Sunday, April 13th, the "Give A Gift" initiative, in collaboration with San Pedro Town Councilor Dianeli Aranda, hosted its first Easter Egg Hunt and Movie Night at the Honorable Louis Sylvestre Sporting Complex (Saca Chispas Field). This event, designed for children aged three to ten, began at 5PM and successfully brought families together for a day filled with fun, excitement, and entertainment.

San Pedro BTIA hosts Membership Mixer; industry partners are encouraged to sign up
On Friday, April 11th, the Belize Tourism Industry Association (BTIA) San Pedro Chapter hosted a Membership Mixer event at its Tourism Information Center across from the Saca Chispas field. The event aimed to share information about the work and advocacy efforts of both the local chapter and the national BTIA within the tourism industry and encourage new businesses to become members.
