Belize launches nine-month Climate Ready Campaign

Share

The Ministry of Sustainable Development, Climate Change and Solid Waste Management launched the Belize Climate Ready Campaign on September 23rd. The nine-month national public education initiative is being led by the Climate Change Department (CCD) in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP Belize), with support from EUROCLIMA. Government representatives, development partners, and other stakeholders attended the launch to learn about the campaign’s objectives and planned activities.
The campaign aims to help Belizeans understand how climate change is affecting the country and what is being done to prepare for its impacts. Over the next nine months, it will provide information on Belize’s climate commitments, the role of the CCD, and the laws and institutions supporting national climate action. A key focus will be explaining the Climate Change and Carbon Market Initiatives Act, 2026, including its provisions, safeguards, and oversight of carbon market initiatives.
The issue is relevant to San Pedro, where coastal erosion, flooding, and threats to the Belize Barrier Reef can affect residents, businesses,, and tourism livelihoods. Belize’s low-lying coastal communities are particularly exposed to climate and disaster risks. For island residents, the campaign could clarify how national climate plans relate to local concerns and what measures are being proposed to address them.
The launch follows months of preparatory work by the Ministry and its partners to strengthen coordination on climate priorities. In February, the Ministry convened its first Partners Forum to align national frameworks, including PlanBelize 2.0 and the Nationally Determined Contributions 3.0, with projects and investments in biodiversity conservation, renewable energy, water security and solid waste management. Officials described the forum as a foundation for stronger coordination and clearer ways to secure resources over the next five years.
The Climate Ready Campaign builds on that work by turning policy and project information into material the public can understand. “Belize Climate Ready seeks to strengthen climate literacy and foster informed participation in building a more resilient Belize,” the Ministry stated.
Schools, community organizations, businesses, and other stakeholders will be invited to share climate information and encourage questions and feedback. The campaign will include explainer videos, social media content, television and radio features, brochures, flyers, graphics, and community engagement activities.
For San Pedro, the campaign presents an opportunity to connect national climate action with the island’s concerns, from protecting its coastline and marine environment to preparing homes and businesses for changing conditions.
