Police have questioned and released two persons who were initially detained in connection with the early-morning shooting of a fisherman in the San Pedrito area of San Pedro Town. No one has been charged as yet, and the investigation remains ongoing.
According to police, the incident occurred at approximately 3:50AM on Sunday, August 16th. Initial investigations revealed that 26-year-old Belizean fisherman John Hernandez was entering his yard in San Pedro Town when two men arrived in front of his residence on a motorcycle. One of the men reportedly dismounted, ran toward Hernandez, and fired several shots in his direction, causing his injuries.
Police responded to a report at the Dr. Otto Rodriguez San Pedro Polyclinic II at approximately 4:13AM, where they observed Hernandez suffering from gunshot injuries. He was initially treated at the island medical facility before being flown to Belize City, where he was admitted to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital for further medical treatment. Hernandez was subsequently listed in stable condition.
Video footage of the incident circulating on social media appeared to show portions of the attack. Police also processed the scene and recovered several expended shell casings as part of their investigation. Following the shooting, officers conducted operations across San Pedro and initially detained two persons believed to have information regarding the incident.
Officers questioned the two people and subsequently released them. Authorities have not announced any arrests or charges in connection with the shooting.
Police have not publicly confirmed a motive and are reportedly investigating possible gang-related connections. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue following leads to establish the circumstances surrounding the shooting and identify those responsible.
