The San Pedro Police Formation held a memorial display in honor of the late Police Constable Arilee Young on Wednesday, August 25th. A condolence ledger for persons wishing to pay their respects and sign was available.

Former San Pedro female police officer and daughter murdered in Belize City
Police officer Arilee Young began her career in San Pedro in 2013. Years later she was transferred to Belize City, where Young and her 17-year-old daughter were murdered by her boyfriend Robert Glenford Perriott on Saturday, August 21st. Perriott then turned the firearm on himself.

Derricia Castillo Salazar out on bail after arraigned for Wounding
Retired Belize Defence Force Captain Derricia Castillo Salazar avoided remandment at the Belize Central Prison after meeting a $2,000 bail following her arraignment at the San Pedro Magistrate Court today for Wounding. Salazar is accused of stabbing a female in the face during an altercation around 2AM on Sunday, August 15, at a hotel in San Pedro Town.

Mexican outlaws rob Belize Fisheries staff at sea
Belizean authorities are investigating an incident involving a pair of employees from the Belize Fisheries Department (BFD) who were robbed by Mexican pirates on Saturday, July 24th, while monitoring corals at a treatment site. The incident took place at Barracuda Patch within the Conservation Zone 1 of the Bacalar Chico National Park and Marine Reserve 22 miles north of San Pedro Town.

San Pedro holds a wake in protest of Laddie Gillett’s unjustified death
Concerned Belizeans across the country are protesting and calling for justice after police corporal Kareem Martinez allegedly shot and killed 14-year-old Laddie Gillett. His life was cut short when the teenager and his family were visiting Placencia in southern Belize on July 14th. Reports are that Gillett and some friends were running on the beach trying to beat the 10PM curfew when he was killed. The incident has sparked outrage among the Belizean public, and in San Pedro Town, Ambergris Caye Gillett was remembered with a pass-thru candlelight vigil.

Arrests expected soon for San Pedro’s recent shootings
San Pedro Police continue their investigations into two separate shootings on Saturday, July 10th, and Monday, the 12th. The Honourable Kareem Musa, the minister in charge of police, is optimistic and, during an interview with The San Pedro Sun, said arrests are expected to take place soon.

Second non-fatal shooting within the week on La Isla Bonita
A second shooting incident was reported in San Pedro Town on Monday, July 12th, in the DFC subdivision. One person identified as 25-year-old Joshua Gongora, received gunshot injuries. He was transported to the Dr. Otto Rodriguez San Pedro Polyclinic II, where he was treated and airlifted to Belize City, where he remains stable. Several persons were reportedly detained for questioning, but no reports of charges have been issued as yet.

San Mateo shooting under investigation; victim in stable but critical condition
The police investigation continues in the shooting of 35-year-old Luis Abner Tun, which occurred on Saturday, July 10th, at the Clumsy Restaurant and Bar in the San Mateo Subdivision of San Pedro Town. Tun survived the attack and remains in a stable but critical condition at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital in Belize City. No one has been arrested and charged, and police have not established a motive as to why Tun was shot.
