Steve Arceo shot and killed after reported house break-in

The San Pedro Police is investigating a deadly shooting that occurred late on Thursday evening, June 20th, at a house in the Secret Beach area that resulted in the death of 46-year-old Steven 'Steve' Francis Arceo. Police reported that when they responded to the incident, they found Arceo's lifeless body with gunshot wounds hanging through a glass window.

Belize ends 2023 with the lowest murder rate in years

While the last weekend of 2023 resulted in two additional deaths related to gun violence, one considered a possible act of self-defense, the total murder count for the year was 85, the lowest for Belize since 2005, dropping Belize’s murder rate per 100,000 residents to 19.1. The reduction in violent crime is considered very positive for the country’s public safety efforts, as the murder rate in recent years has been over 100 per year.

Jose Mendoza convicted for the fatal stabbing of his father-in-law

Just before Christmas, former island resident Jose Ricardo Mendoza was convicted for the 2018 fatal stabbing of his father-in-law, Gaspar Vargas. Mendoza was tried at the High Court in Belize City, where he was given 25 years for the crime. He was sent back to the Kolbe Foundation-Belize Central Prison to start his sentence.

San Pedrito shooting victims need help to cover medical expenses
