Doctor Love: Happiness

Share

Dear Doctor Love,

I went to see an old friend of mine the other day. I see her a lot of times on the street and we stop and said hello but we never have time to sit down like we used to eight or ten years ago.

I passed her walking on the street last week and offered her a ride home. When we got there she invited me in so I went in and had some of her birthday cake from the day before. Her children and some of her grandchildren were there and the kids were running around playing and enjoying themselves. Her husband came home from work and we sat and chatted. I could not help thinking of how happy everyone in the house seemed to be. Their house is very humble and they can’t even afford a washing machine. I thought of my brother, who lives in a house that costs a lot of money. He is very proud that it sits on the ocean and yet he never even looks at the sea. He has every gadget and expensive thing that a man can have like motorbikes and computers and even a karaoke machine and yet he is always talking about what he is getting next. His children have all of the latest toys. Still, his house is always full of bad feelings, with everybody fighting or disagreeing about everything.

Why is it that some people are happy with the way things are and others always seem to be looking for something else? I would like for my poor brother to be as happy as my friend and her family. Is there anything I can tell him or show him that might help?

Dear Sis,
Unfortunately, you probably cannot help him. Happiness is definitely something that comes from within. You can’t buy it or rent it and you usually can’t find it. Happiness finds you when your circumstances are right.
