On Saturday, July 18th, the San Pedro Junior College (SPJC) celebrated its 19th Commencement Exercise, graduating 36 students in three different programs at the Angel Nuñez Auditorium. Held under the theme ‘Use what you’ve been through as fuel…Believe in yourself,’ the ceremony saw students receiving their Associate Degrees in Business Administration majoring in Accounting, Business Mangement, and Tourism Management.

The ceremony began at 5PM with the 2020 graduating class proudly marching to the tune of Pomp and Circumstance. This followed official protocols including the singing of the National Anthem and an invocation by Abel Guerrero Sr. Immediately after, the Salutatory Address was delivered by graduate Nirisi Deidra Sherwin, who obtained a cumulative GPA of 3.61.

Master of Ceremonies, Alex Nuñez introduced the guest speaker, one of the founders of the San Pedro High School Maestro Angel Nuñez. He unfortunately couldn’t be present, so his speech was read by member of the Board of Governors Martha Guerrero. It highlighted the early beginnings of secondary education on the island, commended the creation of a junior college in 2000 and provided recommendations on what can be done to further benefit the education sector on the island.

Dean Gustavo Ellis delivered some remarks to the audience, thanking the community for their support of the junior college. He encouraged students aspiring to a tertiary level education to think of the SPJC, which operates at night, allowing students to have a full time job during the day. He also announced the commencement of a new program for an Associate Degree in Paralegal Studies, and encouraged the graduates to further qualify themselves with this new degree to be offered at the SPJC.

Afterwards, teachers Neima Ozaera and Froylan Gilharry distributed awards to the honor roll students. Patrons and supporters of the junior college were also recognized including Dean Ellis for his long-standing service in education on the island.

Graduate Esther Margarita Galeano (3.82 GPA) then delivered her Valedictorian Address. Galeano highlighted all the challenges she and her colleagues went through to achieve such a milestone in their lives. She said that despite disappointments, stress and obstacles, strength must be sought to overcome the impossible and make anything possible. She thanked everyone that helped her during her studies at the junior college, particularly her parents.

Following that inspiring speech, teacher Ozaeta, the patron of the 2020 graduating class, distributed the diplomas/Associate Degrees.

Mathalicia Vasquez had the privilege to serenade the graduates with her melodious voice and the song called ‘Unstoppable.’ The ceremony concluded with the Vote of Thanks Address by graduate Yesenia Elizabeth Garcia (3.58 GPA).
