Students at San Pedro Roman Catholic Primary School observed International Literacy Day on Tuesday, September 8th, under the theme “Literacy for People, the Planet, and Prosperity.” The annual observance was celebrated across Belize, with the San Pedro students participating in educational and fun activities involving literature, drama, folklore, and patriotism.
The school’s management shared that the event provided a platform to highlight the importance of literacy. Teachers helped students set up booths around the school compound for a literacy fair held from 9AM to 1:30PM. Students from the different classrooms visited the displays throughout the day, along with parents and other family members.
Teacher Antonio Aragon said the annual event encourages students to develop an interest in reading. He explained that literacy includes the foundational skills of reading, writing, and communication, which help people understand their surroundings and the wider world. “The different presentations today include drama, puppetry, and storytelling,” he said. Aragon also encouraged the island community to continue supporting activities that promote literacy among children.
Throughout the school compound, students took part in activities that introduced them to literature while highlighting their reading, creativity, and communication skills. The booths featured colorful presentations and interactive sessions designed to make learning enjoyable, particularly for younger students. Their enthusiastic participation reflected the school’s continued commitment to encouraging a lifelong love of reading.
International Literacy Day is observed annually on September 8th. UNESCO established International Literacy Day in 1966, with the first observance held in 1967 to raise awareness of the importance of literacy for individuals, communities, and societies. The 2026 observance marks 60 years since the initiative was established and offers an opportunity to reflect on progress made while recognizing the literacy challenges that remain.
Despite significant advances over the decades, millions of children and adults worldwide still struggle to access education and acquire basic literacy skills. Through activities such as its annual literacy fair, San Pedro Roman Catholic Primary School continues to remind students that reading and writing are essential tools for education, communication, and future success.
