San Pedro High Revives Student Council After Decade-Long Hiatus

Share

San Pedro High School restored its Student Council on October 5th, ending ten years without an official student government. Students elected Slate 3, known as “Team Fourward,” through a formal voting process. The newly elected council consists entirely of Form 3 students.
The school administration reintroduced the council to give students structured opportunities to represent their peers and contribute to school life. Students with strong academic and behavioral records were invited to apply for positions, resulting in five slates competing for leadership.
The campaign period included a special assembly where candidates presented their platforms, followed by a week of campaigning across campus. On election day, students were required to present their identification cards before casting their ballots. Voting took one hour, with an 80% student participation rate.
According to the administration, maintaining a functional Student Council had been challenging in previous years. The school’s busy calendar of activities and events created logistical difficulties, as did assembling a team able to fulfill its responsibilities consistently. These challenges contributed to the decade-long absence of an official council.

This year, the administration renewed the initiative to give students a greater role in school affairs. The election gave candidates a chance to present their ideas and the student body a chance to choose its representatives.
Team Fourward’s elected officers are President Kayjiah Samuels, Vice President Samuel Benavidez, Secretary Kevin Valle, and Treasurer Kamila Maldonado. Their platform focused on student welfare and community engagement, with proposals addressing practical needs during the school day.
Among the council’s proposed initiatives are a student feeding program and increased access to water dispensers. To help put these plans into action, members are reaching out to local businesses, organizations, and parents for donations and other contributions.
With the election concluded, the council will now work to implement its proposals and represent students’ interests. Its return creates a formal avenue for student participation, while community support could help the newly elected officers carry out projects to improve school life.
