San Pedro welcomes 52 new tour guides

On Tuesday, August 1st, 52 islanders received their Belize Tourism Board (BTB) certification after completing the national tour guide training. A short ceremony was held at the Angel Nuñez Auditorium to acknowledge the recipients. The San Pedro Junior College’s collaboration with instructors Philip ‘Billy’ Leslie and Josue Sosa made the course possible.

SPJC signs MOU with UB to provide a bachelor degree in business management

During the graduation ceremony of the San Pedro Junior College (SPJC) on Saturday, July 8th, the president of the University of Belize (UB), Vincent Palacio, and outgoing Dean Gustavo Ellis inked a Memorandum of Understand (MOU) to offer a bachelor degree program to SPJC students in business management. Incoming SPJC Dean Paul Kelly and UB Dean for the Faculty of Management and Social Science, Dr. Bernard Watler, also signed the MOU.

SPJC graduates 38 students: Dean Gustavo Ellis retires

The 2023 graduation season ended on Saturday, July 8th, with the 22nd Commencement Exercise of the San Pedro Junior College (SPJC). The celebration of the students’ achievement was held under the theme, ‘Helping others in their time of need isn’t just selfless charity but anchoring in success.’ The graduation differed from previous events as it saw a special recognition to Dean Gustavo Ellis, who officially retired from SPJC.

SPACE celebrates the achievement of 18 students

The graduation season continues on La Isla Bonita. On Friday, June 16th, the San Pedro Adult Continuing Education (SPACE) celebrated its 11th Commencement Exercise, honoring 18 students with their high school diplomas. SPACE, operating as part of the San Pedro Junior College (SPJC), is the night division of secondary studies on the island. Located within the San Pedro High School and SPJC campus, SPACE continues to see an increase in student population, helping islanders finish their high school studies.

SPHS honors senior students at their 2023 graduation ceremony

On Saturday, June 10th, the 2023 San Pedro High School (SPHS) graduating class celebrated their high school commencement exercises at the Angel Nuñez Auditorium. The graduation program included presentations, inspirational speeches, and the distribution of diplomas. The celebration began at 10AM, presided by Mistresses of ceremonies, and fellow graduates, Stacey Campos and Caden Delgado. Attended by proud parents and friends, the anticipated event lasted for over two hours, highlighting the accomplishments of 113 students, who were honored with various certificates of recognition and high school diplomas.

Graduation season 2023 has begun; TIA holds graduation ceremony

Schools across the island are gearing up for an exciting 2023 graduation season. The Island Academy (TIA) opened the 2023 celebratory season, with seven students graduating Standard Six (eighth grade) on Friday, June 2nd. Ethan Guerrero, Carlos Nuñez, Sahara Jones, Charlie Stewart, Frank Vandy, Briani Gongora, and Toby Oakley marched to the tune of Pomp and Circumstance, enjoyed a morning of speeches and awards, before receiving their primary school certificates. Family and friends gathered at the TIA campus at Mahogany Bay Village south of San Pedro Town to witness and celebrate the students’ accomplishments.

IDB and GPE Partner for Education Funding in Belize

The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) have teamed up to transform education in Latin America and the Caribbean. As part of this initiative, the two institutions have approved a total of $20 million in financing to support the Skills for the Future Program in Belize. The program will accelerate foundational learning, bridge the skills gap, prepare students for a changing job market, close gender gaps, and promote inclusive education.
