Sittee River Methodist Experiences the Wonders of the Sea with ReefKeeper Belize

Share

Students from Sittee River Methodist enjoyed an educational trip to Tobacco Caye in the South Water Caye Marine Reserve (SWCMR). ReefKeeper Belize, based on Tobacco Caye, is committed to spread environmental awareness and build strong partnerships within the stakeholder communities of the SWCMR. This trip is the third of several upcoming, weekend field trips in the ReefKeeper Ambassadors: Community Stewardship & Recycling Program, funded by GEF Small Grants Programme.
The primary school students, accompanied by teachers, chaperones, and Principal Julie Faux, learned about the three marine habitats: coral reef, mangroves, and seagrass. They were able to experience the wonder of seeing fish and coral firsthand with guided snorkeling. Participants learned the history of the caye, and explored the island’s many natural treasures. “For many of our students, this was their first time visiting the cayes and snorkeling. This trip will certainly create a lifetime impression on them, hopefully to protect their marine resources that are so vital to Belize’s economy,” said Principal Faux.

These impactful field trips provide exciting, hands-on, learning experiences for youths during COVID19 challenges. Since 2007, ReefKeeper Belize has engaged over 2,000 students, teachers, and partners, contributing significantly to environmental education in the SWCMR stakeholder community.
