Belize Forest Department Symposium

Share

The Forest Department, which was founded in 1923, is celebrating 100 years since its creation under the theme: “From roots to canopy: a centennial journey.” To honor this milestone, the Department has planned a series of activities, each designed to highlight its journey over the past century. As part of its centennial celebration, the Department convened a symposium on August 16, 2023 to bring together partners from all sectors, experts, and students to acknowledge and present the work that the Department and its partners have been doing.
As the Forest Department embarks on its second century, the symposium sets the stage for an inspiring journey ahead – one where the lessons of the past converge with the aspirations for the future, all under the timeless canopy of environmental stewardship. Presentations were given by partners, namely the Belize Zoo, Wildtracks, and Ya’axche Conservation Trust. They all engaged participants and highlighted contributions and partnerships that have been created among them and with the Forest Department. Presentations were also made by the Forest Department highlighting the “National Landscape Restoration Strategy” and the Measuring, Reporting and Verification Program, which complements the ongoing work of the Department.

During the event, the Forest Department took time to award the winners of its Centennial theme competition, Phaedra Mohammed-Ali and Danielle Mohammed-Ali, and the winner of the Centennial logo competition, Phaedra Mohammed-Ali.
