Rotaract Club of Ambergris Caye launches Environmental Educational Campaign

Hoping to educate island children on the importance of protecting and keeping our environment clean, the Rotaract Club of Ambergris Caye along with MarAlliance has launched an Environmental Educational Campaign in San Pedro Town.

The San Pedro Town Council pleased with Sargassum clean-up campaign

A total of 1,700 yards of Sargassum was removed from the beaches of San Pedro Town during a massive clean-up campaign on September 27th and 28th, after the non-stop influx of the seaweed was declared a natural disaster.

As of October 1st, conch season opens & runs for approximately 7 months or until conch quota set for that period has been met, which ever comes first.

A short ceremony was held at the Hol Chan Marine Reserve Office in San Pedro Town on Wednesday, September 26th, to officially issue licenses to the newest fly-fishing guides of the island.

The SPTC officially declared the sargassum epidemic as a natural disaster, and invited the entire island community to join their collective efforts in addressing the issue, starting with a mass cleanup on September 27th & 28th.

Belize joining other Central American countries in Fisheries Research Project

Led by the Central American Organization for Fisheries and Aquaculture (OSPESCA), the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations along with Mexico’s National Fisheries and Aquaculture Institute, the project is aimed at evaluating the fishery resources in Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama.

SPTC addresses unregulated beach dredging in northern Ambergris Caye

The site of what appeared to be unregulated dredging in front of a beachside property nearly ten miles north of San Pedro Town caused much concern on Thursday, September 6th, as the practice is not just illegal, but the area is known for turtle nesting. Mayor Guerrero said that the practice is intolerable as it damages the beach, which is ‘Queens Land.’
