San Pedro Town was one of the municipalities to receive humanitarian relief from the Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan) in Belize on Friday, June 26th, in the Capital City of Belmopan. Mayor Daniel Guerrero, along with the other Mayors from across the country, were on hand to receive the relief presented to the Belize Mayor’s Association, which included medical materials totalling $350, 000BZ.
The donation aimed to fight the COVID-19 crisis includes $200,000BZ to support the food and relief programs in the different municipalities, $90,000 made in Taiwan surgical masks, and 150 forehead thermometers. This humanitarian aid was divided between nine cities and town councils to protect their staff and residents. The assistance is to be used to help in urgent need. During the handing over ceremony, Taiwanese Ambassador His Excellency Remus Li-Kuo Chen acknowledged the Mayors’ dedications in their respective communities and told them by applying collective efforts, the pandemic can be defeated.
Mayor Guerrero told The San Pedro Sun that as the local economy continues to take a hit due to the pandemic and the Mayor’s Association approached the Taiwanese Embassy for the possibility of some assistance. The request was approved, and the nine main municipalities across the country now have additional resources to continue running their administrations and look after the people most in need.
Guerrero shared that the San Pedro Town Council was awarded a little over $20,000 as the other municipalities. He added that about 10,000 face masks and 17 forehead thermometers were given to Ambergris Caye. Guerrero said that his administration would discuss how best they can use these resources to benefit those residents who are less fortunate.
Taiwan is Belize’s closest ally in Asia, and its government, according to the Taiwanese Embassy, will continue to work with the Jewel tirelessly to overcome this global challenge. Taiwan is committed to helping Belize to overcome the deadly virus and protect the Belizean people from any potential future outbreak of COVID-19.
