Construction resumes for Caye Caulker Police Station
After weeks of uncertainty, construction on the new Caye Caulker Police Station resumed during the week of May 11th. Islanders, along with the village council, had protested after work at the beachfront property was paused amid rumors that the land had been sold. While the property remains under the control of the Belize Police Department, the council has been requesting its transfer to them.

Civil Aviation Hosts Public Consultation on Belize Drone Regulations
The Belize Department of Civil Aviation held a public consultation on draft regulations for Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS), commonly known as drones, on Wednesday, May 6th. The event, from 9AM to 12PM at the St. Catherine Academy Mercy Center in Belize City, offered a virtual participation option via Zoom. Registration was made available online ahead of the session, and the consultation was attended by stakeholders, including drone operators, hobbyists, and members of the public.

Belize and Cuba Advance Cooperation in Disaster Risk Management
Belize and Cuba took steps to advance cooperation in disaster risk management on May 5th, when the Honorable Henry Charles Usher, Belize’s Minister of Public Service and Disaster Risk Management, met with a high-level Cuban delegation at the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) headquarters. The meeting formed part of Cuba’s official visit to Belize from May 1st to 5th.

The 17th Caribbean Conference on Sustainable Tourism Development, held in San Pedro Town, Ambergris Caye, culminated with the Sustainable Tourism Awards Ceremony on April 30th. Hosted by the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) in partnership with the Belize Tourism Board (BTB), the event recognized some of the region’s leading environmental stewards.

Andre Bauer Nominated as Next U.S. Ambassador to Belize
On April 21st, former South Carolina, USA, lieutenant governor Andre Bauer was nominated by President Donald Trump’s administration to serve as the next United States Ambassador to Belize. The nomination was included in a list of presidential appointments released by the White House. Bauer had previously been nominated for the same post in July 2020 during Trump’s first term in office.

Taiwanese Naval Squadron Concludes Regional Tour in Belize
The Republic of China (Taiwan) Navy’s goodwill fleet made a historic return to Belize on Thursday, April 22nd, as part of the 2026 Midshipmen Cruising and Training Squadron. The visit marked the conclusion of the squadron’s regional tour, which included stops in St. Kitts and Nevis and St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
