Government Seeks $73 Million BEL Share Purchase Amid Opposition Concerns
On June 17th, the Government of Belize tabled the proposed Belize Electricity Investments Bill during a meeting of the House of Representatives. The bill would authorize the government to purchase just over 8.1 million shares in Belize Electricity Limited (BEL), a transaction valued at approximately $73 million.

The National Meteorological Service of Belize (NMS), in collaboration with the Ministry of Public Service and Disaster Risk Management and development partners, officially opened the 14th Annual National Climate Outlook Forum (NCOF) on Friday, June 19, 2026, under the theme, “Strengthening Disaster Risk Management and Resilience through Climate Services in the Context of El Niño and Climate Extremes.”

Belize and Mexico Meet on Economic Cooperation to Strengthen Ties
High-level delegations representing the Government of Belize, the Mexican Federal Government, and the State of Quintana Roo met on June 19, 2026, at the Princess Las Vegas Conference Room at the Santa Elena border to advance the ongoing regional cooperation and strategic partnership between Belize and Mexico. The meeting focused on planning several initiatives for investment promotion, trade, and other economic development initiatives through the creation of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Government of Belize and the Mexican State of Quintana Roo.

United Nations System and Caribbean Governments Affirm Development Partnership under New Multi-Country Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework
Caribbean governments and the United Nations set the stage for a strengthened development partnership with the presentation of the United Nations Multi-Country Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (MSDCF) 2027-2031 for the English and Dutch-speaking Caribbean. The Framework was presented during the 2026 Annual Coordination Meeting of the United Nations MSDCF for the Caribbean, convened on 16 June 2026. Over the next five years, the new MSDCF will guide coordinated UN support to national and regional priorities, helping to accelerate progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals and deliver meaningful results for people and communities across the region.

MCC grant to support second submarine power cable for Ambergris Caye
A US$40 million grant has been approved through the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) to significantly strengthen electricity generation and distribution in San Pedro Town, Ambergris Caye. Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) welcomed the funding, which will assist the company with its project to install a second submarine power cable connecting the island to the national grid. BEL noted that San Pedro’s electricity demand continues to rise as the country’s premier tourism destination expands.

Belize on the Path to Update its Protected Areas Plan with IOM and EU Support
The National Biodiversity Office (NBIO), under the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Climate Change and Solid Waste Management, has begun updating the National Protected Areas Policy and System Plan (NPAPSP), with technical support from IOM and funding from the European Union (EU), under an EU-IOM Integrated Border Management (IBM) initiative.
