Commission of Inquiry final report approved by Cabinet; highlights irregularities by ministers of previous administration
The report from the Commission of Inquiry into the sale of government assets has been completed and submitted to Cabinet. The report was to determine whether proper procedures, practices, applicable rules, and regulations were duly observed in the sale of government assets by the previous administration under the United Democratic Party from October 2019 to November 2020. The government announced on Tuesday, January 11th they will submit the findings to the Office of the Attorney General and Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions for advice and action deemed appropriate.

MIDH continues housing project on the mainland; the Cayes are yet to be included
While the ongoing housing program by the Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Housing (MIDH) has yet to reach San Pedro Town or Caye Caulker, 20 homes were delivered to deserving families in December last year in the mainland Cayo and Stann Creek Districts. The MIDH has completed 30 other houses that will soon be given to their owners, and the ministry has approved 35 more to be built. These are single-bedroom homes, and the criteria to qualify when applying to MIDH are applicants/families with none or low income who own a piece of land or have permission to build on someone’s lot. The program assists single parents, the elderly, and the disabled.

Report of the Commission of Inquiry into the Sale of Government Assets
At its sitting on January 11, 2022, Cabinet received and reviewed the Report of the Commission of Inquiry into the Sale of Government Assets. The Commission was charged with investigating the procedures and processes for the sale of government assets during the period of October 2019 to November 2020 and determining whether any improprieties, irregularities or wrongdoings occurred in the sale of such assets and to recommend any corrective measures and necessary actions against those involved.

Haulover Bridge Replacement Project
The Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Housing through its construction contractor for the Haulover Bridge Replacement Project, M&M Engineering Consultants Ltd., informs the public that two permanent mid-river foundation piers will be constructed in the Belize River at a location just downstream of the existing bridge.

Cabinet re-shuffle sees three ministries assigned new ministers
The Government of Belize (GOB) announced on Monday, January 10th, portfolio adjustments in three of its ministries. The re-shuffling, which came into effect immediately, saw new ministers assigned to the Ministries of Health and Wellness, Public Utilities and Logistics, and Transport, Youth, and Sports. According to GOB, the changes came from a comprehensive five-year review of national conditions, Cabinet portfolio performance, and leadership effectiveness.

U.S. Military forces conduct humanitarian and disaster relief exercise in Belize
Currently, the United States Southern Command (U.S. SOUTHCOM) is conducting the Keel-Billed Toucan (KBT), a U.S. military humanitarian and disaster relief exercise in partnership with the Government of Belize. The training is near Ladyville, north of Belize City, from January 7th to the 21st, and is led by the Joint Task Force-Bravo (JTF-Bravo), a unit based in Soto Cano Air Base in Honduras.

GCF Approves Grant Funding for Pre-accreditation of MED, BSIF and Technical Support for BNPAS
The Ministry of Economic Development, Belize’s National Designated Authority (NDA) to the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and the newly formed Climate Finance Unit (CFU), is pleased to announce the GCF’s approval of the project entitled “Enhancing Access for Climate Finance Opportunities, through pre-accreditation support to Belize Social Investment Fund (BSIF) and Ministry of Economic Development (MED) and technical support for Belize National Protected Areas System (BNPAS) Entities”.
