Meeting Held to Discuss Re-opening of the Corozal Free Zone
On Wednesday, December 2, 2020, Hon. Jose Abelardo Mai, the Minister of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise and other officials of the Ministry of Agriculture met with representatives from the Ministry of Health and Wellness and the Chamber of Commerce of the Corozal Free Zone to discuss the re-opening of the Northern Free Zone.

Minister of Public Service Holds Meeting with PSU Representatives
The objective of the meeting was to discuss the recommendation of the Public Service Union on investigating the disposal of Government’s assets under the previous administration. The Union was informed that Cabinet decided to launch a full investigation into the “sell-off” of government assets by the previous administration. The MPSCPR is pleased to inform the public that the PSU has accepted to be part of the investigation process. The inquiry will also include representatives of the Ministry of Finance, the Attorney General’s Ministry, the Ministry of the Public Service and the private sector.

Prime Minister Hon. John Briceño hosts Cabinet Breifing
The Cabinet, chaired by the Prime Minister Hon. John Briceño, met remotely in regular session on Tuesday, December 1st, 2020. • Cabinet decided to launch a full investigation into the “sell-off” of government assets by the previous administration. The inquiry will include representatives from the Ministry of Finance, the Attorney General’s Ministry, the Ministry of the Public Service and representatives from the Public Service Union and the private sector. • In accordance with its commitment to full transparency, Cabinet decided to authorize a forensic audit of Belize Infrastructure Limited, including all projects it administered.

Governor General Receives Credentials from New Ambassador of Mexico to Belize
On November 30, 2020, the Governor General, His Excellency Sir Colville Young, was presented letters of credence by Her Excellency Martha Zamarripa Rivas, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Mexico to Belize. Her Excellency Zamarripa Rivas is Mexico’s 11th ambassador to Belize, and notably, the first woman to ever hold the position since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1981.

Ministry of Health and Wellness Signs MOU with Belize Agricultural Health Authority
A memorandum of understanding (MOU) was today signed between the Ministry of Health and Wellness (MOHW) and the Belize Agricultural Health Authority (BAHA) as a part of the scaling up of the national response to COVID-19. The MOU specifically seeks to enhance and support the diagnostic capacity of the Central Medical Laboratory in terms of delivering PCR testing and more efficient results for SARS-CoV2.

CARICOM to Deploy Election Observation Mission to Belize
The Secretariat of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) has confirmed that it will be deploying a CARICOM Election Observation Mission (CEOM) to Belize to officially observe the upcoming General Election scheduled for Wednesday, November 11, 2020.
