Belize troops training in Jamaica for possible deployment to Haiti

A group of 31 soldiers from the Belize Defence Force (BDF) and 20 Belize Coast Guard (BCG) members, along with their commanding officer, BDF Major Ermil Coh, are currently in Jamaica for a month-long training program. The purpose of the training is to prepare them to join a multinational force that will be deployed to Haiti, which is currently experiencing an escalation in violence. The multinational task force comprises troops from various CARICOM member states, intending to support the Haitian National Police Force in restoring security in the country.

Prime Minister Announces New Portfolio Assignments

After due consideration and consultation, Prime Minister Briceño announces the following changes to the current composition of Cabinet. The Prime Minister has invited Hon. Andre Perez to return as a Minister of Cabinet, with responsibility for the portfolios of Blue Economy and Disaster Risk Management. Minister Perez now assumes control of NEMO and the National Fire Service.

Belize Delegation Meets with Tren Maya Officials in Mexico

A delegation including H.E. Jaime Briceño and H.E. Haisam Diab, Ambassadors of Investment, and H.E. Oscar Arnold, Belize’s Ambassador to Mexico, met with representatives of Mexico’s Tren Maya Railway Project. The meeting was held at the Teya Tren Maya Station in Mérida, Yucatán, Mexico, on March 25.

Senate discusses proposed 2024-2025 fiscal budget

On Tuesday, March 26th, the Senate debated the General Revenue and Appropriation Bill, also known as the fiscal budget for 2024-2025. However, the debate was not robust because members of the Opposition United Democratic Party (UDP) were absent. The proposed fiscal year budget of BZ$1.5 billion was previously debated and passed after a three-day debate in the House of Representatives on Friday, March 22nd.
