The Belize Maya Community rejects section of Maya Customary Land Tenure Policy draft
The Ministry of Human Development, Families, and Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs and the Maya people of the Toledo District continue to be at odds over the draft Maya Customary Land Tenure Policy. Throughout January 2023, consultations have taken place within the district’s Maya villages to dialogue on the critical aspects of the policy, specifically Paragraph Five, which proposes only to recognize 0.75 to 1.8 mil.es from the center of the town as registered as Maya customary lands. The Ministry has emphasized that the Government of Belize (GOB) is not limiting communal lands to one kilometer but keeping the door open for input and mutual agreement by all interested parties.

The first electric bus arrives at the Belize Western Border
Through the Electric Mobility Pilot Project, the first electric bus arrived at the Belize Western Border. Funded by the European Union (EU) and implemented in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Belize City Council (BCC), the Ministry of Public Utilities, Energy, Logistics, and E-Governance (MPUELE) and the Department of Transport (DoT), this is the first of five buses, with the second bus arriving later this week, that will be the foundation to support e-mobility expansion in the country.

Belize Assumes Pro-Tempore Presidency of MIRPS
On January 24, 2024, Belize received the Pro-Tempore Presidency of the Comprehensive Regional Framework for Protection and Solutions, referred to by its acronym in Spanish, MIRPS. The official handing-over ceremony was conducted at the Sixth MIRPS Annual Meeting in Panama City, Panama.

National Health Insurance program coming to San Pedro, Ambergris Caye
Area Representative Honourable Andre Perez stated that the National Health Insurance (NHI) program will be implemented in San Pedro Town, Ambergris Caye, this year. This program will offer island residents the opportunity to obtain medical services from healthcare providers working with NHI at a fraction of the price.
