Area Representative for Belize Rural South, Honorable Andre Perez, has responded to allegations of nepotism after a grocery store owned by one of his relatives was identified as a participant in his constituency's pantry assistance program. Social media posts alleged that Perez's office was favoring the business by directing food voucher recipients to redeem their coupons there. Perez dismissed the claims as politically motivated, stating that the pantry program operates through several grocery stores and is intended to assist families in need with basic food items.

Government Seeks $73 Million BEL Share Purchase Amid Opposition Concerns

On June 17th, the Government of Belize tabled the proposed Belize Electricity Investments Bill during a meeting of the House of Representatives. The bill would authorize the government to purchase just over 8.1 million shares in Belize Electricity Limited (BEL), a transaction valued at approximately $73 million.

Belize and Mexico Meet on Economic Cooperation to Strengthen Ties

High-level delegations representing the Government of Belize, the Mexican Federal Government, and the State of Quintana Roo met on June 19, 2026, at the Princess Las Vegas Conference Room at the Santa Elena border to advance the ongoing regional cooperation and strategic partnership between Belize and Mexico.
