Monitoring of New World Screwworm

The Belize Agricultural Health Authority (BAHA) advises its partners, stakeholders, and the public that it is closely monitoring the outbreak of New World screwworms in Central America. Panama has declared a State of Zoosanitary Emergency and reported cases in cattle, pigs, dogs, and horses. Costa Rica has reported a single case in a dog.

Government to Open Western Border for Cargo Clearance on Saturdays

The Government of Belize announces the opening of the Benque Viejo Border for cargo clearance on Saturdays, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (Belize time) effective July 22, 2023. This decision stems from discussions with Belize's National Trade Facilitation Committee (NTFC) aimed at implementing the 2014 agreement between Belize and Guatemala to extend operating hours at the border.

Belize Hosts the Caribbean Public Services Association Conference

On June 16, delegates from Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Belize, Bermuda, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, Monserrat, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, and Turks and Caicos gathered in Belize City to participate in the opening ceremony for the annual Caribbean Public Services Association (CPSA) Conference.

The Belize dollar bills will soon bear new images, and it will not be King Charles III of the United Kingdom (UK), the country’s new head of state, following the passing of Queen Elizabeth II. While the face of the late queen graces the Belizean currency notes, the images as per the Government of Belize (GOB) for the upcoming new batch will include that of national heroes, the late Right Honourable and Father of Belize’s Independence George Cadle Price and the Father of Democracy, the late Honourable Philip Goldson.

18 Fisheries professionals equipped with new skills through the CRFM & GRÓ-FTP Fisheries Assessment and Data Modelling course

A cadre of eighteen (18) Fisheries personnel from the Caribbean recently completed a customized Caribbean short course on Fisheries Assessment and Data Modelling, convened in Barbados from 21-27 June 2023, by the Caribbean Regional Fisheries Mechanism (CRFM). The training was supported by the GRÓ-Fisheries Training Programme (or GRÓ-FTP), formerly the United Nations University Fisheries Training Programme (UNU-FTP), under the auspices of the United Nations, Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

Belize Participates in Regional Workshop on Migrant Workers’ Rights

Belize participated in a regional workshop hosted by the Regional Conference on Migration (RCM), in collaboration with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the International Labour Organization (ILO), in Panama City on June 28 and 29. The delegation included Mr. Valentino Shal, Chief Executive Officer in the Ministry of Rural Transformation, Community Development, Labour, and Local Government; Mrs. Rissela Dominguez-Patt, Labour Commissioner; Mrs. Aida Reyes, Senior Labour Officer; and Ms. Lorine Pott, Port Commander, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade and Immigration.

BAHA Receives Assistance for Laboratory Diagnostic Capacity

On July 3rd, 2023, the International Regional Organization for Plant and Animal Health (OIRSA) handed over laptops and printing materials to the Belize Agriculture Health Authority (BAHA) Animal Health Department. The equipment will help to strengthen BAHA’s response capacity in the event the disease is detected in the country.
