Belizean Troops Return from Military Exercise in the United States
Belizean troops returned from the United States on June 14, 2023 after participating in a three week combat training with U.S. military and international counterparts at Fort Polk, Louisiana. The group included 144 personnel from the Belize Defence Force and the Belize Coast Guard, who provided support for the training of units within the Louisiana National Guard’s Infantry Brigade Combat Team. A total of 5,509 military personnel from the United States and partner nations engaged in the exercise.

In an era marked by increasing rates of chronic diseases and nutritional imbalances, the Ministry of Health & Wellness recognizes the urgent need for a comprehensive approach to nutrition. As a result, the MOHW launched the National Nutrition Policy 2022-2023 in Belize City on June 8, 2023.

The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in Belize was a Platinum Sponsor of the MicroPitch 2022-23 Best Sustainable Entrepreneur Award Belize for the Business Plan Competition MicroPitch 2022-23. The winner of this cash award of BZD$8,0000.00 was conferred to Indira Andrewin, owner of “Cocolove” of Punta Gorda Town, Toledo District. UNDP is pleased to be a part of this great entrepreneurial initiative which purpose is to build a bridge between Caribbean entrepreneurs and contribute to regional integration.

Prime Minister Signs Loan Agreement with Saudi Fund for Development to Construct Tertiary Hospital
On May 30, Prime Minister Hon. John Briceño signed a US$45-million development loan agreement with the Saudi Fund for Development (SFD) for the construction of a tertiary hospital in Belmopan. His Excellency Ahmed Al Khateeb, Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Tourism and Chairman of the Board of Directors of SFD, signed on behalf of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Belize Delegation Attends 12th Meeting of Caribbean Ministers of Labour
Hon. Oscar Requena, Minister of Rural Transformation, Community Development, Labour and Local Government, attended the 12th Meeting of Caribbean Ministers of Labour (CLMM) in Georgetown, Guyana, from May 23 to 25. Minister Requena was joined by Mr. Valentino Shal, Chief Executive Officer in the ministry, and Mrs. Rissela Dominguez-Patt, Labour Commissioner.

Government to Establish a New University Hospital for Belmopan
A significant priority in the Ministry of Health & Wellness (MOHW) is to strengthen universal health coverage, which means that all Belizeans have access to the full range of quality health services they need. This should be accompanied by the fundamental strategy of “improving the quality of care,” which is one of the many underlying principles that made the Government of Belize consider the construction of another hospital in Belmopan. Apart from providing tertiary care services in a phased-in approach, it will also be the secondary care hospital, replacing the current structure of the Western Regional Hospital, which has deteriorated significantly.

Belize Chairs 30th Special Meeting of COHSOD
Hon. Oscar Requena, Minister of Rural Transformation, Community Development, Labour, and Local Government, chaired the 30th Special Meeting of the Council for Human and Social Development (COHSOD), an organ of CARICOM, in Georgetown, Guyana, on May 24. Present at the meeting were Ministers of Labour and heads of delegations from CARICOM member states.
