New Cohort of Beekeepers Complete Training Program

On February 17, 2023, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise, in collaboration with the CARICOM Development Fund (CDF), held a graduation ceremony in Orange Walk Town for new beekeepers. Forty-five participants from Belize, Orange Walk and Corozal districts were trained and provided with materials and equipment to start new beekeeping enterprises.

The National Anti-Money Laundering Committee (NAMLC), in partnership with the U.S. Embassy’s International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs Unit and the University of Belize, hosted Belize’s first annual Anti-Money Laundering and Countering the Financing of Terrorism Conference (AML/CFT). The two-day event began on Tuesdya, February 14, 2023 in Belize City with an opening ceremony that included remarks from Minister of State in the Ministry of Finance, Economic Development and Investment Honorable Christopher Coye, U.S. Ambassador to Belize Michelle Kwan, Financial Intelligence Unit Director Kent Clare, and University of Belize President Dr. Vincent Palacio.

GOB releases new standards for public transportation

The current administration came into power in November 2020. As soon as the new Government of Belize (GOB) settled down, the different ministries started working on their plans. One of those government branches is the Ministry of Transport. With the Honourable Rodwell Ferguson, one of their aims was to modernize public transportation in the country. The ministry worked on the requirements, and after almost three years, the standards to fully update the country's public transit were released on Thursday, February 16th.

President of Cuba Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermudez visits Belize

For the first time, a Cuban leader visited Belize on Sunday, February 12th. The First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba and President Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermudez were officially visiting the Jewel, where he was invited to an extraordinary joint session of the National Assembly. The historic visit was a sign of the strong ties between both countries. The visit was also the opportunity to sign two agreements between Belize and Cuba, and the United States (U.S.) urged to lift sanctions on the island nation.

Special Envoy H.E. Rossana Briceño to Attend Women Empowerment Forum in Taiwan

H.E. Rossana Briceño, Special Envoy for the Development of Families and Children of Belize and the Chairperson for the Spouses of CARICOM Leaders Actions Network (SCLAN), will visit Taiwan from February 14 – 17, 2023, to attend the international forum "Empower Women! Empower LAC!" on February 15, 2023.

Ministry of Public Utilities, Energy, Logistics & E-Governance Hands Over Solar Photovoltaic System to the University of Belize

On February 6, 2023, the Government of Belize, through the Ministry of Public Utilities, Energy, Logistics & E-Governance, signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the University of Belize (UB) to formalize full ownership and operation of the 480 kilowatts 'peak' (KWp) Solar Photovoltaic (PV) System to the university.

Government assures that former Guantanamo Bay detainee Majid Khan poses no threat to Belize

It has been a week since the arrival of Majid Khan, a former al-Qaeda courier, to Belize. The 42-year-old Pakistani was held in the high-security United States (U.S.) facility in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, for over 15 years on terrorism-related charges. After completing his prison time, he was relocated to Belize following negotiations between the governments of the U.S. and Belize. Upon his arrival, Foreign Minister Honourable Eamon Courtenay assured the Belizean people that Khan's presence in the country posed no threat to national security.

Belize Poultry Industry receives Trade and Market Access Boost as Poultry Health Regulations come into effect

The Belize Poultry Health Regulations, Statutory Instrument No. 121 of 2022, published in the Gazette on 25th August 2022, came into effect on 30th November 2022. These regulations will enable the Belize Agricultural Health Authority (BAHA), in collaboration with poultry farmers, to effectively prevent, control, and eradicate poultry diseases. It also calls for effective biosecurity controls at poultry establishments to further safeguard the industry. As part of the implementation process, poultry industry importers, exporters, and other poultry establishments are required to register with BAHA, registration commenced in November 2022.
