BPD and BDF Receive Equipment to Increase Citizen Security

On November 15, 2022, Hon. John Briceño, Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Economic Development, and Investment, handed over vehicles to the Belize Police Department (BPD) and computer equipment to the Belize Defence Force (BDF). The items were procured under the Belize Integral Security Programme (BISP), a BZ$60-million-dollar project funded by the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI), which is intended to strengthen the capacity of the BPD and BDF thereby enabling officers to provide increased security for citizens.

Ministry of Economic Development Continues to Implement Science and Technology in Rural Farming

On November 15, 2022, the Ministry of Economic Development, through the Resilient Rural Belize (RRB) Program, signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the National Meteorological Service (MET) of Belize for subcomponent 2.3 of the RRB ─ Investment in Territorial Climate Resilient Assets. This calls for the procurement of a Climate Information System (CIS) that will be housed at the MET Office in Ladyville and used as the principal mechanism through which information about climate will be archived, analysed, modelled, exchanged, and processed.

Belize’s Minister Orlando Habet asks for a firm commitment against climate change at COP27

A Belizean delegation led by Minister of Sustainable Development, Climate Change and Disaster Risk Management Honourable Orlando Habet is currently participating at the annual United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties, commonly referred to as COP27. The 27th edition is taking place in El Sheikh, Egypt, where on Tuesday, November 15th, Minister Habet highlighted the impacts of climate change and appealed to developed countries that have built their wealth on exploiting fossil fuels, causing climate crises in countries like Belize.

Government aims for resilient housing project after Hurricane Lisa

On Monday, November 7th, Prime Minister Honourable Dr. John Briceño stated that at least $20 million is needed to assist the areas affected by Hurricane Lisa. Most of these areas in and around Belize City experienced the destruction of homes poorly built. According to the Prime Minister, the plan moving forward is to assist in rebuilding these structures with more substantial materials like concrete, strong enough to withstand powerful storms. As such, he said the long-term plan is a housing project to see sturdy homes across the country.
