Belize establishes diplomatic relations with Saudi Arabia

On Saturday, September 24th, Belize officially established diplomatic relations with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The signing and sealing of the new diplomatic alliance took place in New York City, USA, where Prime Minister Honourable Dr. John Briceño is currently heading a delegation attending the 77th annual session of the United Nations General Assembly.

Belize to Attract More Foreign Investment and Streamline Exports with IDB Support

The Inter-American Development Bank has approved an US$8 million loan to promote Belize´s foreign direct investment and trade performance through a series of measures aimed at streamlining trade and investment procedures and providing tools for small and medium-sized firms to join global value chains.

Joint Press Release on Belize-EU Political Dialogue

In accordance with Article 8 of the Cotonou Agreement, Belize and the European Union held their annual political dialogue on September 20, 2022, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belize. Belize's delegation was headed by Hon. Eamon Courtenay, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade and Immigration, and the delegation of 12 ambassadors from the European Union (Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Finland, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, The Netherlands, Romania and Sweden) was headed by Ambassador H.E. Marianne Van Steen.

Belizean flags taken by Guatemalan army at the Sarstoon River returned to Belize’s Embassy

The Guatemalan armed forces took down Belizean flags planted on the Sarstoon Island by Belize Territorial Volunteers (BTV) members claiming they were on their territory. According to maps, this island is within Belizean territory; however, Guatemala claims it is on its side. BTV leader Wil Maheia denounced the Guatemalan soldiers for confiscating the Belizean flags. Even though Belizean security personnel asked them to turn them over, they refused and kept the flags. While it was unknown what they would do with the flags, on Independence Day, Prime Minister Honourable Dr. John Briceño informed the nation that the flags were returned to the Belize Embassy in Guatemala City, Guatemala.

Enabling a Green-Investment Environment for Belize

Hon. Christopher Coye, Minister of State in the Ministry of Finance, Economic Development and Investment, was invited to speak at the Green Climate Fund’s (GCF) Private Investment for Climate Conference in the Republic of Korea. This high-level session was geared toward bringing together a group of government ministers and development organizations to discuss the importance of an enabling policy environment that will allow private markets for climate investment to develop citing specific actions.

Ministry of Agriculture and Taiwan ICDF Organize Lamb and Mutton Culinary Craft Workshop

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise, in collaboration with the Taiwan ICDF Breeding Sheep and Goat Production and Guidance System Enhancement Project (Sheep Project Phase II), held a Lamb and Mutton Culinary Craft Workshop at the Food Processing Facility in Central Farm, Cayo District, on September 15, 2022.

Belize’s NDA Presents at GCF Global Conference in Korea

Dr. Osmond Martinez, Chief Executive Officer in the Ministry of Economic Development and Belize’s National Designated Authority (NDA), presented at the Green Climate Fund (GCF) Global Conference for Programming in the Republic of Korea, on the topic of Accreditation and Partnership Modalities to Leverage GCF Financing.

Belize and Taiwan Sign Security Cooperation Agreement

On September 14, 2022, Hon. Florencio Marin, Jr., Minister of National Defence and Border Security, signed on behalf of the Government of Belize, a Coast Guard Cooperation Agreement with the Ocean Affairs Council of the Republic of China (Taiwan).
