National Forensic Science Service Receives First-of-its-Kind Laboratory Equipment in Belize

September 7, 2022, the Ministry of Economic Development handed over a Thermo-Scientific TSX Series High-Performance Laboratory Refrigerator for evidence storage and a Handheld Portable Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) Spectrometer for rapid field identification of liquid and solid chemicals to the National Forensic Science Service (NFSS) through the Ministry of Home Affairs and New Growth Industries.

New Electronic Passport Issuance and Control System to be Launched

In October 2022, the Government of Belize through the Ministry of Immigration will launch a new application process for electronic passports through the Electronic Passport Issuance and Control System (e-PICS).

Belize and Quintana Roo Sign Memoranda for Business Collaboration

Two memoranda were signed by Belize and Mexico. The first memorandum was signed between the Corozal Free Zone and the Chetumal Industrial Park to facilitate collaboration between the two investment schemes and to collaborate on attracting investment and markets. The second memorandum formalized the commitment between the Ministry of Finance, Economic Development and Investment of Belize and the Secretary of Economic Development of the State of Quintana Roo to establish a formal framework for inter-organizational technical cooperation and coordination.

Hon. Henry Charles Usher Receives Courtesy Visit from H.E. David Comissiong

On September 7, 2022, Hon. Henry Charles Usher, Minister of Public Service, Constitutional and Political Reform and Religious Affairs, held discussions with H.E. David Comissiong, Ambassador of Barbados to CARICOM and the Association of Caribbean States (ACS). Accompanying the minister were Mr. Cesar Ross, Director of the Good Governance Unit, and members of the Good Governance Unit and the Belize Reparatory Justice Commission.

Cabinet Briefing for 6th September 2022

During the briefing, Cabinet affirmed its policy decision that no surface mining (strip, open put, mountain top) or any other type of mining activity in the Gales Point Manatee area shall be permitted having regard to the surrounding communities' concerns and given the threats and damages it may cause to the environment, including its extensive and sensitive biodiversity, watershed and other immense ecological systems.

Belize to get a primary radar 

Belize’s air space will soon be better monitored after it was announced on Thursday, September 8th, that the country would acquire a primary radar with assistance from COCESNA, the Central American Corporation for Air Navigation Services. The announcement was made after a meeting in San Pedro Town, Ambergris Caye, where Minister of the Blue Economy and Civil Aviation Honourable Andre Perez is hosting a two-day event with COCESNA’s representatives.

Cuban shipwreck immigrants lose boat to the Government Of Belize

A vessel that drifted with 16 Cuban nationals to Belize waters is now the property of the Government of Belize after its captain supported an application by the Immigration Department to have the vessel forfeited. The boat remains impounded at the Belize Coast Guard compound in San Pedro Town.

A team from the Ministry of Investment continues its tour of industries in southern Belize. On September 3, 2022, the team visited Belize Crafts Limited, better known as Maya Bags, in Punta Gorda Town.
