The Republic of China- Taiwan is one of Belize’s closest and strongest foreign allies, supporting the country at all times. On Tuesday, April 14th, 60,000 high quality face masks made in Taiwan touched down aboard a cargo aircraft in Belize destined as a donation by the Asian ally to Belize’s Ministry of Health.

The official handing over of the face masks will take place on Thursday, April 16th and they will be used by frontline medical personnel directly addressing the COVID-19 threat in the country. The masks were shipped from Taiwan’s capital Taipei about a week ago, and after traveling through various connecting points at cities in the United States of America, Panama, and Guatemala, the precious cargo is now in Belize. The Taiwanese Embassy in Belize reiterated their commitment to Belize in a statement on their social media account. “At this difficult and critical moment, we would like to tell all our friends in Belize, Taiwan is always on your side,” the statement read.

Belize and Taiwan have shared diplomatic relationships for more than 30 years. Belize recognizes Taiwan’s successes in combatting the COVID-19 pandemic and continues to advocate for its Asian ally to be allowed to participate in the World Health Organization and its annual World Health Assembly.
