Awareness Fair held to commemorate World Diabetes Day

Share

November 14, 2024, is World Diabetes Day, a global initiative to raise awareness about diabetes and its impact. In Belize, where an estimated 21,745 individuals are affected by this disease, the observance is particularly significant because diabetes is the fourth leading cause of death in the country. To commemorate this day, the Ministry of Health and Wellness (MOHW) launched a campaign titled “Access to Diabetes Care,” highlighting the importance of understanding diabetes risk and ensuring timely access to medical information.
On World Diabetes Day, various activities took place in Belize, including in San Pedro Town. In partnership with the San Pedro Lions Club, the San Pedro Town Council hosted a Diabetes Awareness Fair at Central Park. This event provided locals with valuable information about diabetes and allowed them to have their blood pressure and glucose levels checked. Starting at 9 AM, the program was designed to support individuals with diabetes and educate the public on managing the condition effectively.
In mainland Belize, the Belize Diabetes Association plays a vital role by advocating for improved diabetes treatment and control through education and support services. In collaboration with the MOHW, they participate in health fairs where the public can receive blood sugar checks and access educational materials. Additionally, community clinics across Belize offered free health examinations and diabetes tests. Schools also contributed by hosting information sessions to educate students about diabetes management and prevention techniques. These initiatives are crucial as they provide immediate medical care and promote long-term community awareness and education.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), World Diabetes Day is an opportunity for everyone to unite and raise awareness about diabetes as a serious global health issue. Ensuring fair access to primary medical care is essential, particularly in areas like Belize, where healthcare resources may be limited.
These initiatives aim to raise awareness, provide healthcare services, and promote diabetes education. They highlight the importance of accessible healthcare for everyone affected by diabetes and reflect a community-driven approach to addressing this significant health issue.
