MOHW Minister Hon. Kevin Bernard tours San Pedro Polyclinic; staff kitchen room get appliances
On Thursday, September 7th, the Minister of Health and Wellness (MOHW), the Honourable Kevin Bernard, visited San Pedro Town and stopped at Dr. Otto Rodriguez San Pedro Polyclinic II to discuss how his ministry can assist the island’s main referral health facility. Area Representative Honourable Andre Perez and San Pedro Lions Club members accompanied the minister during his tour of the facilities. The visit also saw the government representatives donate a stove, gas tank, and television set for the staff kitchen room.

San Pedro’s Dr. Joshua Canul awarded a Chevening scholarship
Dr. Joshua A. Canul is preparing to leave the country to pursue a Master’s degree in Applied Infectious Disease Epidemiology at the University College London. The British High Commission in Belize confirmed that Dr. Canul was awarded a Chevening scholarship recently to pursue such studies in the United Kingdom (UK). The island doctor has been at the Dr. Otto Rodriguez San Pedro Polyclinic II since 2018, treating San Pedranos with acute and chronic illnesses, among other medical services.

501 Run Club hosts first 5K Glow Run
On Saturday, August 19th, San Pedro’s 501 Run Club hosted its first 5K (3.1 miles) Glow Run to celebrate its first anniversary and continue promoting a healthy lifestyle on the island. The activity organized by the community running club awarded the top three male and female runners, while all runners received a medal for their participation.

Belize strengthens its health system through PAHO’s Essential Public Health Functions
Through the European Union-funded Health Sector Support Programme (EU-HSSP) Belize, the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) and the Ministry of Health and Wellness (MoHW) facilitated a two-day stakeholder consultation workshop on Belize’s Essential Public Health Functions (EPHFs). Almost 60 stakeholders from various Government ministries and departments analyzed each of the 11 renewed EPHFs to identify gaps and eventually develop an action plan to address priority gaps.

World Breastfeeding Week 2023
World Breastfeeding Week is celebrated globally from August 1 to 7, each year. This year’s theme, “Enabling Breastfeeding: Making a Difference for Working Parents”, speaks to strengthening the capacity to protect, promote and support breastfeeding across all levels of society. This year’s theme will focus on breastfeeding and working mothers and will provide a strategic opportunity to advocate for essential maternity rights. Working women must be given basic maternity provisions equating to robust breastfeeding support when returning back to work.
