Senate discusses proposed 2024-2025 fiscal budget

On Tuesday, March 26th, the Senate debated the General Revenue and Appropriation Bill, also known as the fiscal budget for 2024-2025. However, the debate was not robust because members of the Opposition United Democratic Party (UDP) were absent. The proposed fiscal year budget of BZ$1.5 billion was previously debated and passed after a three-day debate in the House of Representatives on Friday, March 22nd.

Belize Accesses Funds for Climate Change Project to Strengthen Sugarcane Industry

The Ministry of Economic Development, as the National Designated Authority to the Green Climate Fund (GCF), received approval for Belize’s largest climate change project entitled, “Building the Adaptive Capacity of Sugarcane Farmers in Northern Belize”. The grant totals BZ$77,682,600, with funding of BZ$50 million from GCF and co-financing from project partners at BZ$27.6 million and BZ$30,000 from the Government of Belize. The project was approved during the GCF 38th Board Meeting being held in Kigali, Rwanda, from March 4 to 7. Eleven project funding proposals were put to the GCF Board for approval, with Belize being the only Caribbean country to table a project.

Tourist arrivals to Belize reach record high, surpassing 2019 numbers

The Belize The Belize Tourism Board (BTB) announced on Tuesday, March 5th, that the number of overnight tourist arrivals to Belize for January and February of 2024 has exceeded that of 2019. The report stated that foreign visitor arrival figures were historic, and February alone hit an all-time high for any month in the country’s tourism industry.

Anke Doehm starts Cruelty to a Child trial in Belize City

The trial for the criminal case against Anke Doehm for the death of her adopted daughter Faye Lin Cannon started on Wednesday, February 21st, at the High Court in Belize City. Doehm faces a charge of Cruelty to a Child after Cannon was found dead in her bedroom on July 3, 2017, in their apartment north of San Pedro Town, Ambergris Caye.

Over 900 illegal firearms destroyed by law enforcement officers

A record number of firearms were destroyed on Friday, January 19th, at the Police Training Academy in Belmopan City. The 900-plus illegal weapons were seized from across the country throughout the past years. The Firearm Destruction Initiative is a collaborative project between Belize's law enforcement agents, the Caribbean Community Implementation Agency for Crime and Security (CARICOM IMPACS), the Mine Advisory Group (MAG), and the British High Commission.

Islander David Gonzalez sentenced to life in prison for wife’s murder

San Pedro resident David Gonzalez remains at the Kolbe Foundation-Belize Central Prison, where he is starting a life sentence for the murder of his wife, Marisela Gonzalez. Gonzalez was convicted of the crime in November 2023 and will be eligible for parole after serving 35 years in prison.

Belize Education Upliftment program comes to San Pedro High School

On March 8th, 2024, Prime Minister Honroable John Briceño announced the Belize Education Upliftment Project (EUP) expansion to include 12 new secondary schools starting in the 2024/25 academic year. The initiative is part of the Belizean government’s educational reform program, “Together We Rise,” which already serves nine schools. San Pedro High School will join the list of schools benefiting from the EUP. The program aims to support government-owned and government-aided secondary schools in promoting continued education in Belize.

First Tour Guide graduation ceremony held for 2024

A group of 36 residents from San Pedro have received their certification from the Belize Tourism Board (BTB) after completing a four-month-long national tour guide training. A brief ceremony to commemorate the accomplishment was held on Friday, March 1st, at the Angel Nuñez Auditorium, with the presence of their family and friends.

The Belize International Music and Food Festival returns to San Pedro this year

After its first edition debut on the island in August 2022 and then in Belize City the year after, the Belize International Music and Food Festival (BIMFF) returns to San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, for its third edition set for July 27th and 28th. The young festival organized by the Belize Tourism Board (BTB) aims to feature a mega concert on its first night, followed by a Day Party on its second day.
