The Miss Universe Belize 2026 pageant, held on August 15th at Mahogany Bay Village in San Pedro Town, faced criticism following a series of production and organizational issues. The controversy has since led to the resignation of National Director Destiny Wagner and public discussion over who handled the event’s shortcomings.
The pageant, which crowned Caleigh-Rose West as Miss Universe Belize 2026, drew criticism on social media shortly after the event. Among the most visible errors was the use of a backdrop depicting Guatemala’s Tikal archaeological site during a segment intended to display Belizean cultural heritage. The mistake drew widespread online criticism, with many describing it as an inappropriate representation of Belize. Concerns were also raised over limited promotion leading up to the pageant, with some members of the public indicating they were unaware of how to watch or attend the event.

A person who worked backstage at the pageant also raised concerns about the event’s organization, alleging inadequate privacy for delegates and mishandling the announcement of the Top Five finalists. According to the source, this contributed to confusion backstage and during the live production.

In June of this year, management of the Miss Universe Belize franchise was transferred from the locally operated Miss Universe Belize Foundation to Americas Events, an El Salvador-based production company. The change in management has come under increased public scrutiny following issues reported during this year’s pageant.
In the aftermath of the event, representatives of the new franchise management attributed some of the problems to “human error” while also pointing to alleged logistical and operational shortcomings involving members of the local Belizean team. The statements prompted further public discussion regarding accountability for the production and management of the national pageant.

Wagner, who was appointed National Director in July, resigned shortly after the pageant amid the controversy. In addressing her departure, Wagner indicated that she did not want to remain associated with a situation that could “hurt” the delegates or Belize. She had previously emphasized her commitment to representing the country’s best interests while serving in the position.
The controversy surrounding the Miss Universe Belize 2026 pageant has since raised broader concerns about the organization and oversight of the national event, particularly regarding cultural representation and the franchise’s future management in Belize.
