Founded in 1999 in San Pedro Town, Saga Humane Society has recently moved into a brand-new building after 21 years of dedicated service. This organization is committed to promoting kindness and preventing cruelty to animals. As Saga Humane Society expanded and began offering more services, it became clear that a new facility was necessary to accommodate the animals in their care.
The new shelter on Seagrape Drive allows for improved medical care and larger animal spaces. This development is part of a long-term vision to create an animal clinic and education center on Ambergris Caye, which addresses ongoing issues of unwanted pets and animal neglect.
“The process of obtaining permits and architectural drawings took nearly two years to complete,” said President Dr. Heather Braha. Saga’s transition to the new building has been supported by donations and fundraising efforts, with significant contributions from the local community demonstrating their support for Saga’s mission. The new facility will not only serve as a shelter but will also host educational programs aimed at reaching the community more effectively. These programs will include responsible pet ownership, spaying/neutering, and vaccination information.
Saga Humane Society is dedicated to animal welfare issues. It provides subsidized veterinary services to families living below the poverty line and continues spay/neuter campaigns. The organization relies on volunteer efforts and community support and is driven by a strong mission. Braha stated, “We will continue to offer free vaccination campaigns and affordable services to local pet owners. This has become easier now that we have our own facility.”
“Thank you to everyone who has assisted and donated to make this possible,” the president said. The move to Saga’s new headquarters represents hope for distressed animals and the San Pedro community. All the volunteers and professionals leading the society are committed to fostering a sustainable future for animal welfare on the island. This move signifies physical expansion and a serious intent to cultivate a culture of kindness towards all animals in Belize.
