SAGA Condemns Cruelty After Dog Found with Mouth Taped Shut

Share

A dog found in San Pedro with its mouth taped shut and severe facial wounds is now receiving veterinary care after the incident was reported to SAGA Humane Society. The organization has condemned the abuse and is working with local police to identify the person responsible.
According to SAGA, the tape caused extensive tissue damage around the dog’s mouth. It is unclear how long the animal had been suffering before it was found, and its long-term prognosis remains uncertain. The organization said there is “absolutely no excuse for this kind of cruelty.”
The incident has renewed concerns about animal abuse and neglect on Ambergris Caye. In 2024, SAGA rescued Bruce, a dog reportedly left tied without shade or water, who later died from heatstroke. ACES Wildlife Rescue has also responded to cases involving crocodiles that were stabbed or abused.
Belize’s Cruelty to Animals Act, Chapter 115, is the country’s primary legislation addressing cruelty to domestic animals and livestock. SAGA is seeking legal action in the latest case and is encouraging residents to provide information that could assist the investigation.
“Animals deserve protection, compassion and justice,” SAGA stated. The organization also emphasized the wider need to address abuse. “Animal cruelty is happening across Belize, and it must be taken seriously. Animals cannot speak for themselves or defend themselves against abuse—it is our responsibility to speak up and protect them.”
Both SAGA and ACES rescue and rehabilitate abused or abandoned animals. Their work highlights the importance of reporting suspected cruelty and neglect so that animals can receive assistance and authorities can investigate.

SAGA is urging anyone who witnessed the incident or has information about the person responsible to come forward. Reports can be made anonymously. Public information could help authorities intervene, protect an animal, and prevent further abuse.
Anyone who suspects that an animal is being neglected or abused can contact SAGA Humane Society at 226-3266 or email sagahumanebz@gmail.com
