52-year-old Alfonso Wiltshire, San Pedro resident, is back behind bars after he was arrested on Friday, May 12th for additional charges of sexual assault and unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor. Following additional testimonials from the victim, the Director of Public Prosecution ordered his immediate detention as the matter is being further investigated. During his appearance at the San Pedro Magistrate Court on Monday, May 15th, Wiltshire was denied bail, no plea was taken and was sent back to his cell. If he obtains a Supreme Court bail by Friday, May 19th, he will avoid being remanded to the Belize Central Prison until the disclosure of his case on July 14, 2017.
Wiltshire had been re-arrested for the said offences on January 25th, after the case had been dismissed for non-disclosure on August 24, 2016. The prosecutor indicated that new incriminating evidence led to the re-opening of the case. Shortly after that arrest, Wiltshire obtained Supreme Court bail and was set free.
During his most recent arrest last week, Wiltshire was informed that there are additional charges brought upon him, based on additional statements from the victim. The statement was made on January 25th. However, details of such statement have just recently been released by the police, thus, he was re-arrested.
According to the fact sheet provided, besides the previous accusations of Wiltshire sexually abusing the minor in October of 2015, the new evidence revealed that there were four other incidents of unlawful sexual intercourse in June of that same year. The official report states that in every one of those incidents, the minor always received death threats by Wiltshire, if she refused to comply. According to the minor’s statement, those attacks took place whenever she was home alone, describing that in one of the occasions, Wiltshire was already inside the house waiting for her.
Wiltshire briefly told The San Pedro Sun that he believes the law is being unfair to him, since the case was called off last year. He does not understand why they keep bringing up a case, which even the alleged victim’s parents have expressed their desire to not continue with. He questioned the justice system, deeming it malicious, and one that only seeks to deprive him of his liberty.
After being denied bail due to the new additional charges, Wiltshire was escorted back to his cell. Meanwhile, police are certain that when the case is disclosed in the next hearing along with the new charges, they will have further evidence to finally incarcerate Wiltshire.
