Belize Police Department reports decrease in major crimes for 2024

Share

The crime scene in Belize has undergone significant changes when comparing the third quarters of 2023 and 2024, particularly regarding domestic violence and homicide. An analysis by the Belize Police Department focuses on these two categories to illustrate differences in crime rates.
From July to September 2024, the Belize Police Department recorded 226 significant crimes. This marks a decrease of 42 major crimes compared to the same period in 2023. Notably, September 2024 accounted for 37% of the major crimes recorded in the third quarter, with 84 incidents. Additionally, there was a 3% decrease (3 fewer crimes) in significant crimes in September 2024 compared to September 2023. According to the report, there has been a consistent decline in major crimes throughout the year, with July experiencing the most significant drop of 32% (29 fewer crimes) compared to July 2023.
Belize recorded 71 murder victims from January to September 2024, which is an increase of 3 victims compared to the same period in 2023. On average, approximately eight murders occurred per month during this timeframe. The months with the highest number of victims in 2024 were March, with 14 victims, and June, with 13 victims. Notably, a State of Emergency was declared on June 24, 2024, in parts of Belize and the Cayo Districts. This State of Emergency lasted for 90 days and concluded in September 2024. This policy decision may have significantly contributed to the subsequent decrease in murders.
Most recently, in the third quarter of 2024, 13 murders were reported, showing a significant decrease from the 24 murders reported during the same period in 2023. This marks a 46% decline in homicide rates, reflecting ongoing efforts to combat violent crime in the country. The majority of murder victims in both years were men, and at least 50% of the incidents involved firearms. Despite the overall decline in the murder rate, a large percentage of these killings continued to occur in the Belize District, indicating that underlying issues persist.
Reports of domestic violence indicate a troubling trend. In the third quarter of 2024, there were 373 reported cases of domestic violence, compared to 337 cases in the same period in 2023. This represents an 11% increase, underscoring that domestic abuse remains a critical issue, even as most significant crimes have declined.
Demographic data reveals that women aged 20 to 44 are the most frequent complainants, suggesting they may be particularly at risk. Of the reported cases, 87% (275) resulted in court action, while only 13% (42) are still under investigation.
The rise in domestic violence reports highlights the urgent need for dedicated efforts to support victims and eliminate this abuse. Economic challenges, drug addiction, and communication issues that escalate to domestic violence necessitate comprehensive community outreach and support initiatives.
Changes in the landscape of murder and domestic violence in Belize demonstrate that while progress (or regression) can occur in one area of crime or violence, it does not necessarily translate into improved safety and security for all citizens of the nation. According to police, continuous monitoring and tailored solutions will be essential to address these issues moving forward.
