San Pedro Municipal Elections case heard at the Supreme Court

The legal petition regarding the legitimacy of the March 7th Municipal Elections in San Pedro Town was heard on Monday, May 14th by Chief Justice Kenneth Benjamin at the Supreme Court. The legal challenge between the San Pedro People’s United Party (PUP) and the San Pedro United Democratic Party (UDP) calls for new elections on the island, after PUP Mayoral Candidate Andre Perez and his team contested the past elections process, claiming that there is a discrepancy in the results.

Disputed San Pedro Municipal Elections Trial Begins in Supreme Court

After the first court hearing on the controversial results of the 2018 San Pedro Town Municipal Elections on Wednesday, March 28th between the San Pedro United Democratic Party (UDP) and the San Pedro Peoples United Party (PUP) at the Supreme Court in Belize City, the case was scheduled to be heard on Monday, May 14th and Tuesday, May 15th.

Amidst the controversy of the recent municipal elections in San Pedro, whereby the People’s United Party (PUP) is contesting the results at the Supreme Court for a new election, the United Democratic Party (UDP) swore in the newly elected San Pedro Town Council (SPTC) on Tuesday, March 13th.

PUP to seek court action for a new election in San Pedro

The PUP alleges that they are in possession of legal documents, including official documents from the Elections and Boundaries Commission that show over 200 unaccounted ballots. The next legal action, according to PUP Senator and attorney Eamon Courtenay, will be to demand a re-election in San Pedro after challenging the recent results at the Belize City Supreme Court in the upcoming days.
