The third national ranking regatta of the 2015 Belize Sailing Association (BzSA) season took place on Sunday, August 30th at St. George’s Caye. Six sailing clubs from across the country participated in the 6th Annual Battle of St. George’s Caye Regatta hosted by the Belize City Sailing Club (BCSC). Taking top honors in the optimist discipline was San Pedro Sailing Club’s (SPR) very own Kevin Velasquez, while first place in the laser division went to Christopher Young of Corozal Bay Sailing Club (CBSC).
Even in unfavorable weather condition, the young sailors from SPR, CBSC, BCSC, Belize Sea Scouts (BSS), Placencia Sailing Club (PSC) and Caye Caulker Sailing Club (CCSC) still managed to complete the regatta. The races promptly started at 9:30AM with both optimist and laser sailors competing in six races. The ultimate goal of the race is to score the least cumulative points, as such, the highest score out of the six individual races was dropped.
Three races were held in the morning and three were held in the afternoon after a lunch break. By the end of the competition, it was clear that the winner by a large margin was Kevin Velasquez with five points. In second place was Nashira Ricardez from BCSC with 17 point, while her brother Antonio Ricardez to third with 20 points. BSS’s Trent Hardwick placed in fourth with 26 points. Ranking for the remaining participating SPR sailors is as follows: Caroline Sersland in 7th with 31 points, Chris Lopez in 8th with 33 points, Mitchel Sersland in 10th with 35 points and Gracie Brown in 12th with 54 points.
In the laser division, CBSC’s Christopher Young took the first place with five points. Second place went to SPR’s Blanca Velasquez with 13 points. In third was Sarah White, also of SPR with 19 points. SPR’s Jorge Olivarez, Andrew Milner, and Reveral Dixon rounded off the top six finishers placing fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively.
Placing sailors were awarded medals and trophies for their win. Even with low winds, the Battle of St. George’s Caye Regatta was a huge success and sailors definitely had a fun day of competition.
The San Pedro Sun congratulates Kevin on his big win, as well as all the sailors that gave it their all!
