San Pedro athletes place 3rd at Garage Games
Friday, October 2nd, 2015
Over the weekend of September 26th-27th, a delegation of athletes from Ambergris Caye travelled to Merida, Mexico where they competed at the Garage Games Team Edition September 2015. The athletic event saw a total of 210 competitors, which included 12 athletes from WOD Zone San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, participating. The group of Belizean athletes was separated into four teams, two male teams at the intermediate level, one female intermediate team and one female team at the beginner level. After two days of arduous competition, one of the male teams in the intermediate competition, Brute Brothers, claimed the third place overall.
The two-day event included four work-outs, two for each day, and saw the teams competing in their respective divisions. In order to advance to the final event, teams needed to place in the top ten in their category by the third workout. According to Jody Leslie, one of the members of the Brute Brothers it was challenging, but at the same time, their hard work paid off. “Out of seventy other intermediate teams we came in third place. It feels good. We are proud to represent our country and our island, and to know that when you work hard, everything falls into place. The teams comprised of three persons, and some of the challenges included back squats, overhead squats, hang cleans, pull-ups, kettle bell swings/thrust, weight lifting, gymnastics deadlifts and 1,000 meter runs. All of us that went to represent did a great job,” said Leslie.
At the end of the qualifiers on day two, the top ten teams were selected to compete in the final event. This selection saw WOD Zone’s Brute Brothers heading to the male intermediate finals. That last workout included increasing sets of deadlifts, 20 inch box jumps, kettle bell swings, pull-ups, full squats and toes to bar. At the end of the intense routine, cumulative scores saw Ernie Longsworth, Enrique Luna and Jody Leslie making their mark and claiming the 3rd place on the podium. Unfortunately the other three teams (Kaibiles, Mother Thrusters and Bar Bellas) did not make the top ten in their respective categories; but they certainly gave their all and proved themselves worthy of the challenge.
Members of the WOD Zone teams thank everyone who supported them, especially in their fundraising events in order to attend competitions like this. Special thanks go to the San Pedro Town Council, Tropic Air, and Phoenix Resort. The teams plan to continue participating in future competitions to put Belizean athletes on the map.
The San Pedro Sun congratulates the Brute Brothers on their impressive work, and we applaud all the athletes that participated in this event.
