On Saturday, February 25th, the San Pedro Pirates almost lost against visiting team Benque Viejo United. The San Pedro fans flocking to the Ambergris Stadium sighed in relief at the end of the game when the island boys managed to pull off a 1-1 draw.
The first goal in the match came in the 21st minute in favor of Benque United. For the remainder of the game, close attempts were made to close or extend the score gap, but after the first half, Benque retreated to the locker rooms with a 1-0 lead.
In the second portion of the game, the visiting team continued holding on to their lead. A frustrated San Pedro continued trying to break Benque’s barrier without success. Time was running out, and San Pedro ran out of options and strategies. A draw would be better than losing at home and give crucial points to continue their lead in the Premier League of Belize’s (PLB) Closing Season standings.
The game’s time expired and then rolled into injury time. As Benque savored the victory, San Pedro’s Horace Avila finally found the opportunity and tied the game. Minutes later, the long whistle marked the end of the game, and San Pedro managed to avoid defeat. The result of this game has kept the island team leading in the PBL standings with a total of 14 points.
Other games over the weekend saw Verdes crushing PLB’s Opening Season champion, Altitude, 3-0. With this win, Verdes climbed to second place in the standings, while Port Layola held on to third place after a 0-0 draw against Progresso FC.
The San Pedro Pirates are preparing to travel off the island to Orange Walk Town this weekend. They will be facing Progresso FC at the People’s Stadium.
