After being postponed twice due to inclement weather, the match between San Pedro Pirates Football Club (FC) and Progresso FC was finally held on Saturday, November 2nd, at the Ambergris Stadium. The action-packed game elicited loud cheers from the crowd as both teams fought fiercely for a win, but neither succeeded. The score remained tied at 2-2 when the final whistle blew. This was enough to get the island boys into the semi-finals of the Premier League of Belize’s (PLB) regular season.
The island football team started the game on a high note, as Kayden Bowen scored the opening goal in the second minute. However, this early lead did not translate into further momentum for San Pedro, and they struggled to find the back of the net for the rest of the first half. While they fiercely defended their territory, Progresso became the more dominant side. San Pedro focused on defense to keep Progresso at bay, but they were unable to maintain their advantage. In the 41st minute, Progresso’s Kyle Budna leveled the score with a powerful shot. Just two minutes later, Trimayne Harris seized another opportunity and scored Progresso’s second goal.
In the second half, San Pedro emerged as the dominant team, making several close attempts at Progresso’s goal but failing to convert any of them into scores. As time went on, the pressure from their fans grew, encouraging the players to pursue more goals. With a combination of defensive and offensive strategies, Bowen from the San Pedro Pirates found himself again in front of the goal. Seizing the opportunity, he sent the ball into the back of the net, leveling the match at 2-2. The island team continued to press forward, eager to secure a third goal, but despite their efforts, it never came. Ultimately, they had to settle for a 2-2 draw at the end of the game.
This draw places San Pedro in fourth place in the Premier League of Belize standings, with 16 points. Progresso is currently in third place with 18 points. Next, San Pedro is scheduled to face Verdes FC in the first round of the semi-finals. The first match against Verdes, who leads the standings with 24 points, is set for Saturday, November 9th, starting at 7:30PM at the Ambergris Stadium.
