The Belize U-16 Female National Football Team demonstrated their talent and determination at the 2024 UNCAF U-16 Girls Championship, which was held in Managua, Nicaragua. This prestigious tournament featured eight Central American teams, with the U-16 Female National Football Team from Costa Rica securing the championship title. Even though the Belizean squad could not secure a win, the experience served as a means for the young athletes to improve and develop their skills in the international field.

Team Belize

Belize’s journey began in a challenging group stage, facing tough opponents. In their opening match against the host nation, Nicaragua, Belize put up an intense fight but ultimately lost 2-1. The competitive game showcased Belize’s resilience and tactical awareness despite the defeat. Next, they faced Panama in a closely contested game ending in a narrow, 1-0 loss. The Belizean team demonstrated significant promise during this match, creating several scoring opportunities but failing to convert them into goals. In their final group match against Cuba, they again lost by a slim margin, finishing with a score of 2-1.
Throughout the matches, the players demonstrated impressive teamwork and determination, which is promising for their future. Although the Belize U-16 team finished last in the tournament overall, the experience they gained is invaluable. Competing against some of Central America’s best young female footballers allows them to learn and grow as athletes. This exposure is essential for their development as they improve their skills and understanding of the game.
The Football Federation of Belize (FFB) has recognized the importance of supporting women’s football programs nationwide. The participation of the Belize U-16 team highlights a growing trend of increased interest and investment in women’s football in Belize.
As more young girls take up the sport, nurturing this talent through structured training programs and opportunities is essential. FFB’s commitment to promoting women’s football lays a foundation for developing future generations of athletes who can represent Belize on larger stages.

In addition to the team’s efforts, individual players have gained recognition. For example, San Pedro footballer Alysha Reymundo joined the national team for this tournament, showcasing local talent on an international platform. Her involvement exemplifies the potential within Belizean football and inspires other young girls to pursue their dreams in sports.
The Belize U-16 Female National Team remains optimistic as they prepare for future tournaments.
